About Me

Ashique

Healthcare Integration Engineer

Hello, I’m Ashique Elahi Khan.

I’m a Healthcare Integration Engineer with a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering and 18+ years of experience in IT.

I began my career in academia as a Research Assistant and later as a Guest Lecturer in the Computer Science Department. I then transitioned into software development as a Java/J2EE Software Engineer, working in Bangalore for six years. For the past 12+ years, I have specialized in healthcare integration as an Interface Analyst and Developer.

Over the years, I have designed and developed a wide range of interfaces connecting hospital EMR/EHR systems with third-party healthcare applications, including Pharmacy Information Systems, Radiology Information Systems, Laboratory Information Systems, Endoscopy Systems, Dictation Systems, and other clinical systems. My experience spans diverse healthcare platforms, from HP Mainframe and legacy Oracle-based systems to Cerner Millennium.

HL7 v2.x has been at the core of many of these integrations, complemented by XML, JSON, and vendor-specific data formats. I have worked extensively with integration engines such as Rhapsody and Mirth Connect to facilitate reliable and secure data exchange between healthcare systems, both on-premises and with external systems.

My responsibilities extend beyond development to interface troubleshooting, monitoring, maintenance, and ongoing enhancements, ensuring that integrations remain reliable and aligned with evolving clinical and business requirements.

My focus is on building reliable and maintainable healthcare integrations that enable the seamless and secure exchange of information between clinical systems.

Beyond development, I believe my strengths lie in clarity of thought, planning and execution, effective troubleshooting, and creating meaningful documentation that is clear, well-structured, and easy to understand.

Whenever needed, I look for practical ways to simplify my work by creating small, custom tools. For example, I created an HTML/JavaScript page to interpret Cerner Z-segments that standard HL7 readers could not properly interpret, as well as a Cerner Classic Lab Results Reader for interpreting legacy laboratory results.

Alongside my professional role, I take on selected freelance healthcare integration projects through Fiverr as a Fiverr Vetted Pro. I support clients with HL7 interface development, message transformation, troubleshooting, and other integration-related technical work. This experience has allowed me to work on diverse, real-world integration requirements and apply my expertise beyond my primary organization.

I also conduct one-to-one online training sessions on the fundamentals of healthcare integration for newcomers entering the field, as part of my freelance work.

I believe that honesty, transparency, hard work, proper planning, and integrity are essential to building trust and maintaining strong professional relationships.
